HOUSTON, Texas â€" The No. 16 Florida Atlantic University baseball team was held to one run for just the first time in Conference USA play this season in a 9-1 loss at No. 13 Rice.
FAU scattered five hits with Gunnar Lambert hitting a double and Brett Lashley picking up an RBI single in the third for FAU's lone run.
Rice starter Jon Duplantier fanned 11 FAU batters in his 6.2 innings for the win. FAU's David McKay allowed four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work.
Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Rice in the first before Tristan Gray laced a two-RBI single to left to give Rice a lead before an out was recorded. With two in scoring position and one out, FAU's Stephen Kerr made a diving catch and converted it into a double play to end the inning with a two-run deficit.
After Lambert's run in the third, Rice responded as Gray hit a two-run homer to push the advantage to 4-1.
FAU left runners on in each of the final seven innings, including leaving them loaded in the sixth and ninth.
Rice rallied for two more runs in the seventh on four hits and three runs on two hits in the eighth to take sole possession of first place in the Conference USA standings.
