BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" CJ Chatham had the game of his career for the No. 12 Florida Atlantic University baseball team, driving in seven runs on five hits and scoring three of his own as the Owls defeated Charlotte 17-8 on Saturday.
Chatham was one of five FAU starters to record multiple hits as the Owls (23-5, 9-2 C-USA) tied their season-high in runs in their 20th contest with at least eight hits this year. Brett Lashley went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs while Billy Endris and Sean Labsan each tallied two hits and two RBI.
Charlotte (14-18, 4-7 C-USA) struck early with a leadoff triple and a sac fly in the top of the first inning.
FAU responded in the fourth as Chatham led off with an infield single and Sean Labsan hit a two-run homer to right to give the Owls their first lead of the series.
After the 49ers tied the game in the fifth, Lashley and Chatham singled and Endris drew a walk before an error and a sac fly by Christian Dicks drive in a pair of runs to put FAU back on top 4-2. The 49ers battled back in the top of the sixth with a double, sacrifice fly and an error to tie the game once more at 4-4.
In the bottom of the frame, Labsan and Austin Langham singled before a Gunnar Lambert walk loaded the bases. Lashley then laced a double to left to clear the bags, giving the Owls a 7-4 advantage. Stephen Kerr walked and Billy Endris hit an RBI single before Chatham singled up the middle for his first RBI of the day. Esteban Puerta followed with his second RBI walk of the year to plate another run before Langham hit a sac fly to cap off the seven-run inning. Nine consecutive Owls reached safely in the frame.
Charlotte posted two runs in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 11-6 before Chatham drove in Kerr in the bottom of the inning on a single to right after Kerr was hit by a pitch and stole second.
The 49ers snuck another run across in the eighth before another big FAU inning. With the bases loaded and two out, Endris hit an infield single to plate Langham, leaving the bases loaded for Chatham. The junior belted a 1-0 pitch to center field, colliding with the batter's eye for his third home run of the year and his seventh RBI of the game. Chatham's fifth hit of the contest bumped his batting average to .403.
Kyle Marman closed out the game on the hill for FAU, allowing one run on one hit to end the game at 17-8.
Marc Stewart improved to 5-0 on the mound, allowing two earned runs in his six innings of work with six strikeouts.
FAU and Charlotte will square off in the rubber match on Sunday, April 10 at noon. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
