BOCA RATON, Fla. - (April 16, 2016) - The no. 24 Florida Atlantic University softball team swept Marshall with a pair of run rule victories on Saturday. FAU (35-7, 12-2 C-USA) won game one 9-1 in six innings and game two 8-0 in five innings.
Game 1 Notables
Kylee Hanson threw a complete game three-hitter for her 18th win of the year.
The Owls racked up 11 hits in the game.
Carnesha Thompson and Emily Lochten each had three RBI in the game.
Emily Lochten hit her 10th homerun of the season. She's the first Owl to hit double digit home runs in a season since 2002 (Nikki Myers).
Tatum Buckley went 2-for-3 with a RBI
Madisyn Palmer had two hits and two runs scored.
Key Plays
Thompson doubled in Christina Martinez, then came in on Lochten's homer to put the Owls up 3-0 in the bottom of the first. FAU wouldn't score again until the fifth, when six hits, including a two-run triple for Thompson, and two Herd (22-22, 6-8) errors pushed the score to 8-1. In the sixth, Palmer beat out a bunt single, advanced on a Delaney Rickey sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on a Marshall error to end the game.
Game 2 Notables
Amanda Wilson improved to 10-4 in the circle, throwing a complete game three-hitter.
Carnesha Thompson walked, homered, scored twice and drove in two runs.
Madisyn Palmer had a two-run single.
Christina Martinez had two hits and scored three times.
Tatum Buckley went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
Key Plays
Buckley began the scoring with a two-run single in the first, scoring Thompson and Melissa Martinez. Sarah Bencivenga drove in Lochten later in the inning to go up 3-0. Palmer's two-run single made it a five run first inning for FAU. Thompson homered in the second that also scored Christina Martinez to push the advantage to 7-0. The Martinez twins teamed up for the eighth run, with Christina scoring on Melissa's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Wilson retired the Herd in order in the fifth inning to end the game.
