NORFOLK, Va. â€" A back and forth affair came down to the final pitches as the Florida Atlantic University baseball team held off Old Dominion to win its sixth consecutive Conference USA game 10-7 on Friday night.
The Owls (19-4, 6-1 C-USA) remain in first place in the league standings, thanks in part to a four-RBI, three-run performance by senior Christian Dicks. Stephen Kerr scored three times while Austin Langham drove in a pair of runs in a game that saw all nine batters reach base.
Robbie Coursel picked up his third win, allowing one run in two innings while Cameron Ragsdale earned his seventh save of the season.
ODU (19-8, 3-4 C-USA) posted four runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a bases-loaded double and an FAU error.
The Owls responded in the third as Brett Lashley, Kerr and Billy Endris reached to lead off the inning before Dicks hit a two-RBI single through the right side. Esteban Puerta singled to drive in Endris, setting up Langham for an RBI double to tie the contest at 4-4.
Dicks walked and Lashley singled in the fifth before Langham drove in the go-ahead run on a two-out single to give FAU a 5-4 advantage.
ODU struck back in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs on three hits to go up 6-5.
Kerr launched his team-high fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left, to tie the game in the sixth. Endris and Chatham followed with back-to-back singles, setting up Dicks for a sacrifice fly to again give the Owls the lead at 7-6.
The Monarchs didn't go quietly, however, scoring another run on a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly to tie the game for a third time at 7-7.
Kerr led off the eighth with his second hit of the night before being bunted into scoring position by Endris. Chatham then singled to the pitcher and an error allowed Kerr to cross the plate to break the stalemate. Dicks followed with an RBI double off the wall, stole third and came in to score his third run to give FAU its seventh double-digit scoring outing.
ODU loaded the bases against Ragsdale in the ninth before the junior struck out a pair to end the contest.
The Owls and Monarchs square off again Saturday, April 2 at 3 p.m. Free audio stream is available on FAUSports.com.
