MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - (Nov. 26, 2016) - The Florida Atlantic University football team's 2016 season concluded with a 77-56 loss to Middle Tennessee on Saturday night.
The Turning Point
Middle Tennessee (8-4, 5-3 C-USA) opened up the second half with a score for the game's biggest lead, but the Owls (3-9, 2-6 C-USA) stormed back with 21 unanswered to make it 49-42 with 12:13 left in the game.
The Finish
MTSU immediately answered with a 75-yard drive that took just 1:43 to go up again by two scores, and an interception with a big return (58 yards to the Owls' 3) on the next drive led to another touchdown. The Blue Raiders scored four times in the final 10:30 and held FAU to just two scores for the final margin.
Motor's Huge Game
Freshman running back "Motor" Devin Singletary finished his debut season with a banner day. It started on the first drive with a 50-yard rush, and all told, he would eat up a total 235 yards on the ground, second all-time in the FAU record book to his 257 gained three weeks ago against Rice. He had three touchdowns Saturday, finishing just one shy of teammate "Buddy" Gregory Howell's record of 13 (those are the two highest tallies in program history).
Singletary also went over 1,000 rushing yards on the season, 1,021 to be exact, marking the fourth time an FAU back has achieved that milestone (he is third on the list, behind Alfred Morris - 1,392 in 2009 and 1,186 in 2011 - and ahead of Charles Pierre's 1,014 in 2008). Additionally, Singletary trounced the program standard in all-purpose yardage of 288 also against Rice, combining for 396 on Saturday (he had 60 yards receiving and 101 on kick returns as well).
Notables
Quotable
"Obviously it was challenging for us tonight, you have to give them a ton of credit," said Head Coach Charlie Partridge. "Maybe the worst thing we did was knock their quarterback out of the game because they exclusively they went to a very challenging Wildcat scheme ... and their good players made a lot of really, really good plays tonight."
