Owls Defeat Southern Miss for Seventh Straight Victory

BOCA RATON, Fla. - (October 23, 2016) - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven with a hard fought four set win (25-22 22-25, 25-20, 25-22) win over Southern Miss on Sunday. FAU now stands 12-10 on the year and 7-1 in Conference USA.
Notables
- The win streak is FAU's longest under Head Coach Fernanda Nelson.
- Maja Ristic had a match high 20 kills. Abbi Reid joined her in double-figures with 11.
- Genesis Viera had 50 assists and a career high 22 digs to lead all players in both categories. It was her fourth double-double of the year.
- Kori Varney had a career high 19 digs, while Nathalie Rosado added 12. As a team, the Owls outdug USM 72-63.
Key Plays
Back-to-back kills by Abbi Reid capped a 10-4 run that ended the first set and gave FAU a 25-22 win. The Owls trailed 18-15 in the second set and rallied to within a point, 22-21, but the Golden Eagles (16-7, 5-3 C-USA) won three of the next four points to tie the match. USM was able to the score at 11 after trailing by as many as six early in the third set, but FAU answered with a 7-0 run and eventually won the set 25-20. Set number four was close throughout, with the ninth and final tie coming at 22. From that point, a Brianne Wojciakowski kill and consecutive USM attack errors sealed the win for the Owls.
