BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team took 25 shots, but couldn't find the back of the net as UTSA (1-8-1, 1-0 C-USA) came away with a 1-0 victory.
The Owls (6-6, 0-2 C-USA) tallied 11 corner kicks and took 14 second-half shots while holding the Roadrunners to just two shots throughout the match.
"I would first like to congratulate Coach Sheen and his team on their first win of the season," FAU Head Coach Patrick Baker said. "They have traveled and played a very difficult non-conference season on the road. We did a number of good things today and controlled the tempo for long periods of the game. The stats show one game, but unfortunately the score board shows another and that is the one that ultimately matters the most."
In the 37th minute, UTSA's Lauren Hodgdon took an errant pass into the box and scored her second goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner. FAU posted a barrage of seven shots over the final 14 minutes, but were shutout for the fourth time this season.
Claire Emslie took six shots and posted four on goal while Geovana Alves also took six shots.
"They had team possession for a mere 52 seconds in our half during the first 45 minutes, yet led 1-0 on a fantastic individual effort," Baker said. "The result is a tough pill to swallow, but the players will recover and have a great of training. We conclude the first weekend of Conference USA play with no points and 0-2 record, but played some good soccer and statically have created enough to have a 2-0 record. The tests for our team only gets greater as we face two of the Conference's top teams in North Texas and Rice on the road this weekend."
FAU goes on the road to take on North Texas and Rice in Conference USA action this weekend. Results will be posted on FAUSports.com.
