DENTON, Texas -- A fierce Friday night battle went into the final five minutes before a late rally gave North Texas a 2-1 victory over the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team in Conference USA action.
The Owls (6-7, 0-3 C-USA) held the edge in shots for most of the contest until NT (9-2-1, 1-0-1 C-USA) fired 14 second-half shots en route to the win.
"I thought we were well prepared and played some good soccer tonight," FAU Head Coach Patrick Baker said. "North Texas is a very dynamic team that likes to attack very quickly and we managed their personalities for the most part. Most of the first half was 18 to 18 with a hand full of chances for each team."
FAU senior Claire Emslie took three shots on the night bringing her career total to 218 shots and surpassing Susana Lehtinen (2004-07) as the all-time shot leader in FAU history.
In the 34th minute, NT's Amber Haggerty placed a deflection off a header into the back of the net to give the Mean Green the early advantage.
Just nine minutes later, FAU's Amanda Lodge earned her first career goal on assists from Madison Caldwell and Kelsey Parry to even the contest at the end of the first half.
FAU's Sydney Drinkwater made nine saves, including seven in the second half, before the deciding goal in the 85th minute. Haggerty again got into position to score and fired a shot that deflected off of an FAU defender and into the net for the game-winner.
"Disappointing, but we have to re-group, watch some video and prepare to go again on Sunday," Baker said. "Coach Hedlund and his team win a lot of games every year and we are trying to become one of those prominent teams in Conference USA. Our group continues to work hard and play quality soccer - the results will come."
The Owls take on Rice on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. ET. A full recap will be available on FAUSports.com.
FAU's next home battle comes on Friday, Oct. 9 when the Owls host Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
