Missouri City, Texas - After recording a five-over 289 in the second round, and a final round of 11-over 295 as a team at the Houston Baptist University's Huskies Invitational. The Florida Atlantic University men's golf team finished in second place, tallying 874 strokes after three rounds of play and just one shot out of first place.
Cody Christensen finished as FAU's leading scorer for the tournament. Christensen finished the second round tied for sixth, shooting a one-over 72. The sophomore held that sixth place finish as he shot a three-over 74 in the final round.
Freshman Jackson Shoenfelt stepped in for injured Derron Peyton last minute and performed well for FAU. Shoenfelt tied for sixth with teammate Cody Christensen and one other. Overall carding rounds of 73, 70 and 74 for a total of 217. Yuki Fujii previously tied at 11th, tallied 74 strokes in the final round for a total of 219, good for a ninth-place tie.
Pablo Gerboles-Parrilla tallied a three-over 74 in his second round, and bounced back shooting a two-over 73 in the final round for a tournament total of 221 strokes. The senior finished the tournament tied for 15th. Junior Caleb Sibley rounded out FAU's team, shooting 76 in his final two rounds for a tournament total of 226 strokes finishing tied for 30th.
Coach Angelo Sands had this to say about the team's performance, "The guys did really well, and I am proud of them. Having two freshman in the roster and being without our number one guy Derron Peyton, I think they stepped up. Being the first tournament everything was good, but we are going to have to get better moving forward."
Texas Rio Grande Valley took the win for the Huskies Invitational with a 21-over 873. The Owls missed first-place by just one stroke. FAU will continue its fall schedule in Bowling Green, KY on Oct. 12-13 at the Kenny Perry Invitational, hosted by Western Kentucky University. The team finished the 2014 Kenny Perry Invitational in eighth place with Derron Peyton finishing tied for 11th.
