BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" The Florida Atlantic University cross country program will host its second annual FAU Invitational cross country meet on Friday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. The event will be held at South County Regional Park, 11200 Park Access Rd., Boca Raton, Fla., 33498. In last year's inaugural event, the women won the team title, while the men placed second.
"We are very excited to host another home cross-country meet this year," said FAU Head Cross Country Coach Alex Smolka. "There are six new faces on the men's squad and 12 freshmen on the women's side, so we look forward to seeing how they perform under real race conditions after a strong summer and training as a group for the past two weeks."
The Owls are an experienced team with top runners returning for both the men and the women. Sophomore Liz Wellman earned places in the school's all-time top 10 in both the 5K and 6K and was the team's high finisher at both the Conference USA Championships and the NCAA South Regional. Senior Chloe Sell was a two-time C-USA Runner of the Week last season and was an all-conference performer earlier in her career.
On the men's side, Michael Vidal returns after redshirting last season. The senior holds five different school records and is expected to provide leadership and experience to the Owls' roster.
The 2015 schedule includes seven races beginning with FAU's home meet. The Conference USA Championship meet will complete the season on Saturday, Oct. 31, at WKU. The C-USA meet is a qualifying meet for the chance to move on to the NCAA South Regional Meet, which will be held in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Friday, Nov. 13. Each of FAU's six regular season races will all take place in Florida.
Friday's home meet is free and open to the public. For more information, visit FAUsports.com.
