With the 2015 FAU volleyball season starting this weekend, FAUSports.com takes a look at each position on the court leading up to the Owls' home tournament. The third installment takes a look at the Owls depth at the middle blocker position.
BOCA RATON, Fla. (August 26, 2015) â€" The middle continues to be a strength for the FAU volleyball team heading into the 2015 season. The group is likely the deepest position on the squad and several players are looking to make a major impact at the net.
(The coaching staff) feels really good about our middle blockers," said Fernanda Nelson, FAU head volleyball coach. "I believe we have the best middles in the league."
Seniors Katarina Stepanovic (Barosevac, Serbia) and Brittney Brown (Fresno, Ca.) -lead the way for the Owls. Stepanovic became the first FAU player to be named first team All-Conference since 2005.
"Katarina brings so much to the table in terms of what she can do on the court," said Nelson. "She allows her teammates to focus on what they do well."
Brown was a second-team All-Conference selection last season and led the team with a 2.82 kills per set average.
"As well as she played last season, Brittney has improved greatly blocking side-to-side," said Nelson.
Providing depth behind Stepanovic and Brown are junior Brianne Wojciakowski and freshman Gabriela Martin. Wojciakowski averaged 1.33 kills and 0.61 blocks per set while appearing in 22 matches as a sophomore. Martin is expected to see significant time on the court.
"Brianne is playing at a different level and Gabriela will have an opportunity to play right off the bat. I think she's going to help us this year," said Nelson.
The 2015 FAU volleyball season starts on Friday, Aug. 28 with the Owls hosting Bethune-Cookman, Stetson, Binghamton and Georgia Southern. On Friday, FAU faces Bethune-Cookman at noon and Stetson at 7 p.m. The Owls will then play Binghamton at11 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, before finishing up the tournament against Georgia Southern at 6 p.m.
