BOCA RATON, Fla -
The San Francisco Giants selected Florida Atlantic University senior right-handed pitcher Drew Jackson in the 35th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft.
"Drew has been a very good pitcher for us the past two years," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "It took 35 rounds but I am excited that he will get a chance to realize a lifelong dream. He deserved a chance to show what he can do. I also thank the Giants for giving him an opportunity."
With 11 wins over his two years at FAU, Jackson has been a steady force on the mound for the Owls. His 111 strikeouts in that time led FAU, as did his three shutouts. Jackson struck out a career-high 12 batters against UAB in the Conference USA tournament on May 22and and earned C-USA all-tournament team honors for his efforts. His 2.44 ERA was the best among FAU starters as he allowed just 17 walks with 55 strikeouts in more than 73 innings of work. The senior was named Second Team All-Conference USA, ranking among league leaders in ERA, opponent batting average, and fewest walks allowed.
In his two year career, Jackson retired 108 via the strikeout to just 39 walks. He held opponents to a .235 batting average through 137 innings pitched.
The Owls finished the 2015 season 42-19 and ranked as high as No. 12 nationally and made their 11th NCAA postseason appearance. Miller is the 17th player selected in the MLB draft since McCormack became the head coach in 2009. He joins Brendon Sanger, Roman Collins, Seth McGarry and Kyle Miller, who also were selected in the 2015 MLB draft.
