CORAL GABLES, Fla. - In a game that featured ten combined extra-base hits, the Miami Hurricanes outmatched the Florida Atlantic University baseball team to win 14-6 Wednesday night in the final non-conference game of the 2015 regular season.
The two teams had combined for just three extra-base hits in the previous two matchups this season.
Miami (39-13) put runners in scoring position each inning and scored in six different frames, including the first when a pair of singles setup an RBI groundout to put the Hurricanes on top.
UM extended the lead to 2-0 in the third on a triple and a single to double the lead before the Owls (36-15) got on the board in the fourth.
Brendon Sanger led off with his third triple of the year and came in to score on a Roman Collins double. Collins, who leads the team with 48 RBI, crossed the plate on an RBI single by Billy Endris to knot the game a 2-2.
It didn't take long for the `Canes to retake the lead as Willie Abreu sent the eighth pitch sailing over the left-field wall for a two-run homer.
The FAU offense found its groove in the top of the fifth when Stephen Kerr and Brett Lashley hit back-to-back singles and Brendon Sanger walked to load the bases. Senior captain Ricky Santiago then hit his second grand slam of the year to give the Owls their first lead of the game at 6-4.
Miami responded quickly once more, however, when a David Thompson two-run homer in the bottom of the frame tied the game once more at 6-6.
The `Canes blew the game open with a five-run sixth inning that saw a triple and another home run to take an 11-6 lead.
Miami tacked on three more two-out insurance runs in the eighth to seal the contest, taking the season series 2-1.
David McKay was tagged with his first loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits and a walk.
Lashley and Kerr each had multiple hits while Sanger went 1-for-2 with a triple, walk and two runs scored.
FAU goes on the road to finish the regular season at Western Kentucky in a three-game Conference USA series starting Thursday, May 14 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Free audio will be provided on FAUSports.com.
