BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - A solo homerun was the difference in the Florida Atlantic University softball team's 1-0 loss to Western Kentucky on Sunday.
The rubber game of the three game series was a pitchers' duel between WKU's Miranda Kramer and FAU's Kylee Hanson, who each won a game on Saturday. The Hilltoppers (20-7, 7-2 C-USA) had the first scoring threat of the game in the third inning, when a leadoff double and a sacrifice bunt put a runner on third with just one out. However, an unsuccessful squeeze bunt attempt and a strikeout ended the threat.
The Owls (26-12-1, 7-5) had their own scoring threat in the top of the fourth, when Christina Martinez led off with a double and eventually advanced to third on a WKU error. She was left stranded when a strikeout ended the frame. Lexie Norfleet's homerun in the bottom of the fifth initially appeared to be a routine flyout, but landed behind the fence in left for the only run of the game.
"The homerun wasn't a bad pitch by Kylee (Hanson), Norfleet was just able to lift it, and it kept carrying," said FAU head coach Joan Joyce.
FAU was able to get runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't get into the scoring column.
The Owls will travel to Lexington to face #13/T-14 Kentucky in a doubleheader on Monday, April 6. The first game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. eastern start. Live stats will be available at fausports.com and live updates will be posted at the official Twitter page of FAU softball (@fauowlssoftball).
