HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team became just the third team in the nation to reach the 30-win mark this season as it split a doubleheader at Southern Miss on Friday. The Owls (30-9, 12-5 C-USA) won the first game 8-4 against the Conference USA foe before dropping the second game 6-1.
The Golden Eagles (20-13, 9-7 C-USA) posted three first-inning runs before the Owls were able to come back in game one.
Christian Dicks singled to lead off the third and came in to score on a Brett Lashley RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1. After Roman Collins hit a solo home run in the fourth, USM plated a run in the bottom of the frame to go back up by two.
The Owls rallied for four runs in the sixth, thanks to a two-RBI double by Dicks and a two-RBI single by CJ Chatham. FAU tacked on two more in the seventh to put the game out of reach as Esteban Puerta hit his first triple of the season to drive in Collins and Lashley, extending the lead to the final 8-4.
Kyle Miller earned his fourth win of the year, striking out three in 5.2 innings of work. Reily Monkman picked up a three-inning save, striking out four while allowing only two hits.
Christian Dicks was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Chatham also had two hits and two RBI.
The offense couldn't find the magic in the nightcap as FAU was held to its lowest scoring outing of the year and its fewest hits since March 4.
Five walks, two hit batters and one hit in the first two innings allowed the Golden Eagles to jump out to an early lead again as USM went up 2-0 in the second.
Two infield errors after a two-out Chatham single allowed the sophomore to score FAU's only run of the game in the top of the fifth.
The Owls then committed a pair of errors in the bottom of the frame and allowed four hits as USM plated four runs to end the scoring.
FAU threatened with back-to-back leadoff walks in the eighth, but struck out three consecutive at-bats to end the inning.
Sean Labsan was tagged with the loss in his first weekend start, allowing two runs on one hit, five walks and two hit batters. David McKay and John Sebelle each struck out a pair in relief before Blake Sanderson closed out the game with a strikeout in the final inning.
Game three is slated for a 4 p.m. central, 5 p.m. eastern start on Saturday. Live audio is available on FAUSports.com, free of charge.
