BOCA RATON, Fla. - Samantha Messer threw a complete game four-hitter in the Florida Atlantic University softball team's 1-0 win over Charlotte on Sunday. The win clinched a series sweep for the Owls.
The game's only run came in the bottom of the first when Melissa Martinez drove in Carnesha Thompson with a single to center field. Charlotte's best chance to score came in the top of the second when the leadoff batter tripled to right, but a shallow flyout and two grounders ended the threat.
Messer picked up her seventh win of the season, throwing just 82 pitches in the process.
"Sam did a great job, only allowing two runners to reach second base all game," said Joan Joyce, FAU head softball coach. "We needed that from her today."
FAU improved to 29-14-1 on the year and 10-5 in Conference USA play. Charlotte fell to 21-20 and 7-8.
The Owls will travel to Marshall next weekend for a three-game series. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available at fausports.com. Live updates will also be posted at the official Twitter page of FAU softball (@fauowlssoftball).
