CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Fifteen runs over the final three innings propelled the Florida Atlantic University baseball team to its second victory of the day over Charlotte 18-7 after the Owls won the first contest 8-3.
The Owls (17-3, 2-0 C-USA) hit three home runs and five doubles over the two games and averaged a runner nearly every two at-bats with a .453 on-base percentage. Roman Collins, Christian Dicks and Esteban Puerta each tallied four hits and four runs while CJ Chatham had three hits and three RBI.
Chatham doubled to drive in Puerta in the third inning of game one before coming in to score on an RBI groundout by Brett Lashley in the fifth. The Owls tacked on three more runs in the sixth as freshman Ryan Miller belted a bases-clearing, three RBI double down the left field line to put FAU up 5-0.
After Charlotte (4-8, 0-5 C-USA) got on the board in the sixth, Collins and Puerta picked up RBI and Puerta scored to increase the FAU lead to 8-1. The 49ers would rally four two runs on four hits in the eighth to end the scoring at 8-3.
Kyle Miller earned his third win of the season with six strikeouts, two earned runs and no walks.
Game two started in favor of Charlotte as Zach Jarrett hit the 49ers' first home run of the year to put them up 2-0 in the first.
The Owls responded in the second as Collins hit his second homer of the season, a solo shot to cut the lead in half.
FAU would tie the contest in the third as Stephen Kerr drew one of four walks in the inning and came in to score on a wild pitch.
Charlotte retook the lead at 3-2 in the third before Ricky Santiago hit a solo home run in the fifth to knot the game at 3-3.
FAU then batted through the lineup in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to take command of the game, capped off by Kevin Abraham's first career home run, a three-RBI bomb to left.
The 49ers would score one more in the bottom of the ninth, but the FAU lead was too much to overcome.
Reily Monkman picked up his fourth win of the season with 1.1 innings of work, allowing one hit and one walk while recording a strikeout.
The Owls will go for the sweep on Sunday with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Live audio is available free of charge on FAUSports.com with FAU's Brandon Goodwin calling the action.
