Softball Wins Twice on Final Day of Kick-Off Classic

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University's softball team picked up two victories on Sunday with a pair of 7-0 victories over Penn State and LIU Brooklyn at the FAU Kick-Off Classic. The Owls finished the weekend 4-1, their best start to a season since 2009.

In the resumption of a game that was suspended on Friday due to weather, FAU defeated the Nittany Lions 7-0. The Owls led 2-0 in the third inning at the point the game was halted. Laura Mann belted a two-run homer off the scoreboard in right to double FAU's lead in the top of the fourth inning. Sarah Howell swiped home plate as part of a double steal to make the score 5-0. Melissa Martinez drove in her twin sister Christina for the fourth run of the inning.

Freshman Tatum Buckley doubled in classmate Alex Miller in the seventh for the final run of the game. Amanda Wilson threw a complete game two hitter for her first win of the year.

FAU defeated LIU Brooklyn 7-0 in the final game of the day. Three Blackbird errors, combined with RBI doubles by Melissa Martinez and Buckley gave the Owls an early 4-0 lead. The other three runs came the next inning on a Melissa Martinez homerun that scored Emily Lochten and Christina Martinez. Samantha Messer threw a complete game shutout in the win.

FAU will host its ninth annual Strike Out Cancer tournament next weekend. The Owls will play their first game of the weekend on Friday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. against Tulsa. Live stats will be available at fausports.com. For tickets, contact the FAU Ticket Office at 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
