BOCA Raton, FL - Florida Atlantic University's baseball team, which is receiving votes in the national poll, downed No. 8 Miami, 5-3 on Wednesday.
"We need to take it one game at a time," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach about the win and not looking ahead. "We were fortunate tonight...I thought he (Brandon Rhodes) threw great. I thought he threw fantastic." The Owls started junior Brandon Rhodes, who holds a 2-0 record against the Canes. Rhodes held UM scoreless through six innings, scattering five hits and retiring four via the strikeout.
FAU bats gave Rhodes a lead to work with scoring two in the bottom of the first. Brett Lashley, who was 2-for-5 on the night with a run scored, got the Owls started with a single to right. The speedy first baseman moved to third on a Brendon Sanger single up the middle. With the duo on first and third, FAU put on a double steal which scored Lashley. Sanger would score on the next play, an RBI single by third basman Rickey Santiago.
FAU played small ball in the bottom of the third and scored the game's third run on a balk by UM starter Derik Beauprez who moved to 1-1 on the year. The 3-0 lead held for the Owls through the eight, when UM pulled within one in the seventh and then tied the game at three in the top of the eighth.
FAU took its second and final lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth. C.J. Chatham lead-off with a single down the right field line. He was sacrificed the second and moved to third on a Stephen Kerr single, setting up first and third once again. Lashley followed and loaded the bases after UM elected to try to hold Chatham at third rather than turn two or go for the out. Chatham then scored on a wild pitch to put the Owls up 4-3 and move Kerr and Lasley to second and third. Kerr then scored on a Sanger sacrifice fly to center.
Bo Logan return to the mound to close out the game and pick up his first win of the 2015 season. Logan pitched toss two inning and gave up just one hit, a homer. Reily Monkman and Devon Carr combined to pitch the seventh. The duo gave up a hit and an unearned run each.
Offensively, the Kerr, Lashley and Santiago were 2-for-5 with Kerr and Lashley accounting for two runs. Santiago was credited with an RBI. Chatham was 2-for-4 with a run scored, to round out the Owls with multiple hits.
FAU will next play host to a three-game weekend series versus Ohio State. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Fans can follow the live stats at www.fausports.com and can purchase tickets at the gate or by calling 1-866-FAU-Owls.
