Boca Raton, Fla. -
Florida Atlantic men's soccer team is looking to clinch a spot in the conference tournament this weekend as they travel to play conference opponent UAB on Saturday, Oct. 24th at 7 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
Previous matches: The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (1-10-2, C-USA 1-5) got its first victory of the season, winning 1-0 in overtime on Monday night against Conference USA rival Marshall (4-8, C-USA 0-5). The first 98 minutes of the game was a juggernaut between the Herd and the Owls. FAU looked to have control of the game, as they clearly were the aggressor on the pitch tonight. The Owls led the shot chart 8-2 in the second half, but couldn't get a lucky break as the game ended in regulation still tied, 0-0. FAU caught their lucky break on counter attack from junior Thomas Gallitz in the 99th minute. Gallitz had an incredible run down the left sideline and was able to split two Marshall defenders just passed mid-field, while maintaining possession and chipped one over the keepers head from 18-yards out to give FAU its first win of the season.
History: FAU's all-time record against UAB is 1-3. In 2014, FAU fell 3-0 to UAB in the final game of the season. The Blazers scored their first goal in the 19th minute. Their second came in the 46th minute off a corner kick and then a header for a goal. UAB went up 3-0 with their final goal in the 62nd minute. FAU had four total shot attempts in the match coming from Deniz Bozkurt, Austin Bartel, Kevin Byrne, and Michael Spezza. Goalkeeper Theo Jamilloux had three saves to bring his season total to 67.
The team faced the then No. 15 ranked Blazers in 2013, losing 6-2. UAB put its first point on the board with an 18th minute assisted goal. FAU's Ronald Garcia attempted two shots before UAB scored its second goal in the 23rd minute of play. Five minutes later, the Blazers scored again to put them up 3-0. In the 55th minute, Scott Cohen collected his first collegiate goal putting FAU on the board. After five minutes of play, Daniel Montoya crossed the ball to Garcia who earned the Owls second goal in the 66th minute. Between the 72nd and 79th minute, UAB iced the game with three more goals and the 6-2 loss for the Owls, their first of the 2013 season.
