The Owls (3-2) lost to Coastal Carolina (21-25, 25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 15-13) in their first match of the day. The first set was a back and forth affair that featured 10 ties and five lead changes. The final tie came at 18-18 before FAU went on a 7-3 run, capped off by a Brittney Brown kill to take the set.
CCU got out to an early lead in the second set and the Owls were unable to catch up, falling 25-16. In the third set, the Owls held an early lead, but could not hold off a CCU rally and lost the set 25-19, giving the Chanticleers a two sets to one lead.
FAU had a three-point lead early in the fourth set, but the Chanticleers rallied to level the score at 15. The score was tied again, this time at 17, when the Owls had their second set-ending run of the day, scoring eight of the final 11 points to win the set 25-20 and tie the match at two sets each.
The fifth set, much like the first, was close the entire way. The Owls were able to stave off CCU's first match point, but couldn't repeat the feat, losing the set 15-13. Brittany Brown had a match high 19 kills.
FAU swept North Florida (25-23, 25-22, 25-21) in its second match of the day. The Owls fell into an early hole in the first set, but rallied to tie the score and eventually take the lead. UNF did not go quietly and led fought back to knot the score at 23. However, Brittany Brown had a kill and teamed with Genesis Viera on a block to preserve the victory for FAU.
The Owls had to come from behind once again in the second set, aided by Kristina Rankovic's five kills, to earn a 25-22 win and take a two sets to none lead. Set number three was even for the early going until an 11-4 FAU run put the Owls up 19-12. The Ospreys trimmed the margin to as little as a point before a final surge clinched the match for FAU. Rankovic ended the match with 13 kills to lead all players.
The Owls will continue action at the Jacksonville Marriott Classic on Saturday when they face Jacksonville and Bethune-Cookman.
