JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team swept its two matches at Day Two of the Jacksonville Marriott Classic.
The Owls (5-2) swept Jacksonville (25-22, 25-15, 25-15) in their first match on Saturday. Liene Mellupe served FAU out to a 5-0 lead in the first set. A JU rally put the Dolphins ahead 22-21 late in the frame, before the Owls took the final four points to win the set.
In the second set, Mellupe's serving, combined with that of Genesis Viera and Brianne Wojciakowski gave the Owls another early advantage. This time, FAU was able to maintain control throughout and won the set by double digits.
Set number three didn't begin as easily for the Owls, as JU stayed close in the early going. FAU's lead was just two points, at 8-6, when it on a 5-1 run to seize control of the set on its way to completing the sweep. Wojciakowski had a team high 12 kills, while Kristi Tekavec added 10. Viera narrowly missed a double-double with 36 assists and nine digs. Brittney Brown was named to the all-tournament team.
FAU also defeated Bethune-Cookman in straight sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-11). The Owls outhit the Wildcats .483 to .069 in the win. Kristi Tekavec led all players with 13 kills, while Michele Swope posted 12.
The Owls will travel to New Orleans for next weekend's Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic.
