On Saturday's Game and Marshall (Opening Statement)
It came up again, what I'm talking about is when we got the ball back with 40 seconds, they had three time outs, there was probably a number of people in the stands saying why aren't they taking a knee. (We didn't take a knee) because, they could mathematically could get (the ball) back. What happened differently, as opposed to Wyoming a few weeks ago was we huddled on the sideline. We made sure to look in everybody's eyes. There was no one not on the same page - cover the ball. Thankfully, we got the first down and were able to ice the game. I think we had over 11 minutes of possession time in the fourth quarter, which was huge. One of those, being a long 96-yard drive of amazing play calls and execution by Brian Wright (FAU's offensive coordinator) and the kids. It was good to execute some of those things at the end of the game.
As we look back, obviously we need to get a better start to some games. Being down 14 to nothing is disappointing. They hit us on a flea flicker. The one that we really took the hardest look at is their drive at the end of the second quarter. We could have done things better and at least held them to a field goal. We were, what we call, an "Okie" front and they ran some draws and got some yardage. That is ok. There was a play that they hit that we just didn't execute well enough - the touchdown pass to the tight end. But, we will learn from the things we didn't do well and will build on the things that we are proud of and we will move on to a really, really good football team. They are ranked and they deserve it. I can't say complete but, this is a very, very well-rounded football team. They are a powerful offense. They are in the top-10 in offensive rankings. They are in the top-10 in a lot of the defensive rankings - most notably scoring. A road game again, we have a challenge. We haven't been successful on the road and that is something that we will take a very hard look and already have.
(Rakeem) Cato is a great player. They are doing a Heisman campaign for a good reason. He can run. He can throw. He is a dynamic player. He is smart when he is out in the open in terms of sliding or making you miss. You can't fall asleep in pursuing the run. Some other players that really impressed me, their running back No. 47 Devon Johnson - he is 240 plus pounds and he runs like he is 240 plus pounds. And, I mean that as a compliment. He is powerful. He can run well enough to pull away from some guys at the second level. He is a good player. Tommy Shuler is one of the most dynamic receivers. I'm impressed by him and their Mike linebacker, who is their leading tackler (Nevel Hewitt) and an active player. They have a really good punter (Tyler Williams) that helps them with field position. It helps their team success and they had a punt block for a touchdown against Old Dominion. So, you have heard me hit on some dynamic things in all three phases so a team that is ranked and leading our conference, you would expect to see those things. Really the bottom line is simple - this is a very good football team. We are going to need to be at our best in all three phases and protect the football and do all the obvious things to have a chance to win on the road. Our kids are excited for the challenge. They are proud of what they were able to overcome on Saturday night. We need to get started a little faster this week to give ourselves a chance against Marshall. But, if they get one on us quick we are not going to panic. We are just going to keep fighting and do what we do best.
