BOCA RATON, Fla.- Kristina Rankovic had a match high 11 kills as the Florida Atlantic volleyball team swept Southern Miss (25-20, 25-17, 25-13) on Friday night. With the victory, the Owls surpassed their conference and overall win totals from last season.
FAU (14-6, 5-2 C-USA) built a big lead early in the first set, behind strong serving from Liene Mellupe and Nathalie Rosado. The Owls led 24-15, but USM managed to stave off five set points before Rankovic ended the frame with a kill.
Set number two was tied in the early going before a 9-2 Owl run gave them a 15-8 advantage. Another late Golden Eagle rally narrowed the gap slightly before FAU scored four consecutive points to take a two sets to none lead.
In the third set, FAU took control early and won going away, 25-13. For the match, the Owls outhit USM .270 to .057. Katarina Stepanovic, Ivana Bulajic and Liene Mellupe all had eight kills on the night for FAU.
