Boca Raton, FL - Florida Atlantic University former baseball player Dickie Hart has returned to Boca Raton for the second time, earning a role as the program's hitting and infield coach under veteran Head Coach John McCormack.
"I am really excited about joining the coaching staff and continuing FAU's strong baseball tradition. I am part of that tradition and want to show current players - new and returning - how important it is to be an Owl," said Hart.
Hart was a middle infielder during one of the most successful periods in the program's proud history, recording a .641 winning percentage (154-86). He ranks second in school history with 74 runs scored during the 1999 season, when he earned first-team All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors and was an honorable mention All-American selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association. That senior season, Hart helped FAU tie a NCAA record with 34 consecutive victories. He played professionally with the Anaheim Angels for the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
"I am very pleased that Dickie has come back to contribute to our program as a coach. As a player, he embodied everything you wanted in a student athlete. He was an excellent student, a good player and a high-character person," said McCormack in welcoming Hart to the coaching staff. "I look for him to bring those same qualities to the program as a coach."
Hart's coaching career included a successful three-year coaching stint at Tarpon Springs High School near Tampa. He earned 5A Pinellas Coach of the Year honors in 2011 and was named the 2012 Pinellas County Coach of the Year after compiling a 24-5 record. His teams made two regional appearances and won district championships. He has also been an associate scout within the Tampa Bay Rays organization. Overall he had a .620 winning percentage (54-33 record) in the three seasons as head coach.
"It is terrific to be back at FAU," stated Hart. "I have always considered the baseball program, school and Coach McCormack as a family. I have followed the program and come back to participate in alumni games and attended the first home football game in the new stadium (last fall)."
This is Hart's second stint on the FAU baseball coaching staff, serving as a volunteer coach in 2003 while earning a master's degree in business, with a concentration in sports administration. He also worked in the Owls' athletic marketing department.
"It is always special when you can bring back one of your own. Dickie has been a big part of our family," said McCormack.
FAU's baseball program is coming off a 2012 season in which it captured its second Sun Belt Conference regular-season title in the last three years with a 19-8 league record. Overall, the team posted a 32-22 record for its 14th consecutive winning season.
