BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University football will take to the field for the first time under the direction of Head Coach Carl Pelini versus Wagner College on Friday, August 31 at FAU Stadium 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
The day will mark several significant milestones for the program. It will be Pelini's first game as a collegiate head coach, and the first time an Owls' football team has taken the field behind someone other than Howard Schnellenberger, the program's founder. The game will be just the third time in the program's 12 seasons that FAU has opened the schedule at home.
The Owls opened its inaugural season in 2001 versus Slippery Rock University and the historic 2007 season versus Middle Tennessee State University. Slippery Rock was played at then-Pro Player Stadium in Miami and the Middle Tennessee game was played at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. When the Owls face-off against Wagner, it will be the first time the season opener is played on FAU's campus, and the first time FAU has played on a Friday.
The Owls will have just one game under their belts when they open Sun Belt Conference play versus Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on Saturday, September 8. FAU will then face two Southeastern Conference opponents when they travel to Athens, Georgia to face the University of Georgia, which finished 2011 with a 10-4 record and atop the SEC East at 7-1, on Saturday, September 15. One week later on Saturday, September 22, the Owls will visit the University of Alabama, the reigning National Champions, who finished 12-1 on the year and 7-1 in the SEC West. FAU will end the month of September by playing host to the University of North Texas on Saturday, September 29. The Owls have faced UNT eight times, dropping the last two.
October will open with a bye and then see FAU travel to Monroe, Louisiana where they will face ULM on Saturday, October 13. FAU has faced the Warhawks eight times with the two victories recorded at ULM. Prior to last season the average game was decided by 2.8 points.
FAU will then visit the newest Sun Belt Conference member when they travel to the University of South Alabama, in Mobile, Alabama for a Saturday, October 20 match-up. The month of October will end with a home game versus Troy University on Saturday, October 27.
The first two games of November will be played on the road. FAU will play at the Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday, November 3, the first time FAU has played a service academy. The Owls will then play at SBC-foe Western Kentucky University on Saturday, November 10 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, before the battle of in-state SBC member FIU scheduled for Friday, November 16. FAU holds an 8-1 mark against FIU in the annual "Shula Bowl," but will seek to avenge the lone loss. The "Shula Bowl" will be televised live on ESPNU. The Owls will then have a bye week for Thanksgiving and will return to close out the first season under Coach Pelini on Saturday, December 1 when they play host to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
