BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University softball, playing the second-consecutive weekend of softball, split on Friday dropping the first game to No. 22 University of Kentucky and defeating Wright State University 6-2 in a game that ended near midnight.
FAU took a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the third inning versus Kentucky when Jordan Stovall drove in the Owls first run with a single down the left field line to score Stephanie Call, who took the loss in the pitching circle. Laura Mann then doubled in two for the lead.
The Owls will be held scoreless through the next four frames while the Wildcats scored four in their final frame behind two FAU errors.
The Owls tallied nine hits in the game but it was the six errors that undid their upset efforts.
FAU returned to the field for the sixth game of the day in the FAU Kickoff Classic to jump on the board with two in the top of the first. Wright State would plate one in each of the first two innings but was held scoreless the remaining six innings by freshman Paige Pender, who picked up her first collegiate win.
Pender scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run despite retiring none via a strikeout. Offensively, the Owls were led by senior second baseman Heather Barnes who had two RBI while Taylor Fawbush and Carly Speerin had two hits each. Whitley Herb walked three times and was one of five Owls to score.
FAU, 1-6, will return to action at 6 p.m. Saturday but will continue its hosting efforts throughout the day Saturday and Sunday.
