Gainesville, FL - Junior Taylor Albrecht and freshman Robert Dubuque posted their first career victories to highlight performances by Florida Atlantic University men's tennis players in Sunday's final day of the University of Florida's Gator Invitational in Gainesville. The Owls battled in-state rival UCF in singles and doubles action.
"We responded to the challenge today in singles," said Brandon Stokes, FAU's head men's tennis coach. "We were able to execute and energize ourselves and each other. We fell short in the end, in terms of results, but created the beginning of a significant team identity. We are learning and continue to improve. That's important at this time of the season."
Albrecht picked up a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set victory over UCF's Francesc Aulina to anchor the top singles flight.
Meanwhile, Dubuque rallied to earn a three-set singles victory over the Knights' Eugene Dolgovykh. The Melbourne, Fla. native dropped the opening set before turning things around with a decisive 6-0 triumph in the second set. The positive momentum carried over into the deciding third set with a 6-4 score picking up the victory.
Freshman Will Neuner dropped a hard-fought three-set match 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.
The Owls dropped all three doubles matches by 8-4 scores to the Knights.
FAU returns to the court on Friday, September 23, when it participates in The State of Florida Men's Tennis Championships in Tampa.
