Boca Raton, Fla. - The longest winning streak in seven years helped catapult the Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team to its first winning season since 2004. The Owls finished the spring dual match season with a 13-12 record and a sixth-place finish in the Sun Belt Conference.
Head Coach Marcy Hora-Cava, who completed her third season as head coach, believes the team improved with each match and overcame early-season struggles to find success on the court.
"Everyone on this team has improved this year, emotionally and physically," stated Hora-Cava. "Some showed those signs more quickly than others, but the most important thing is that everyone is improving and we're doing it together."
The Owls have improved their win total each year under Hora-Cava guidance -- from seven wins in 2009 to nine wins in 2010 to this year's 13 victories. FAU had a six-match winning streak this season that included triumphs over Sun Belt Conference rivals South Alabama and Troy, along with victories over Towson and Coastal Carolina. The thrilling 4-3 victory over Troy came when junior Erika Mrazkova won two competitive sets in the match.
The doubles team of junior Justine Humair and sophomore Marlene Ryan was earned all-conference honors after posting a 9-4 record for the season.
Individually, five players recorded 10 or more singles victories. Leading the way was Ryan with 19 wins, including a 15-6 mark at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Natasha Basma went 13-6, featuring wins in nine of her 11 matches at No. 3 singles. Senior Virginia Augustin and Humair each posted 14 wins.
Hora-Cava credits some of the team-building activities off the court led to the strong team unity that resulted in positive team results. Player had the rare opportunity to watch a space shuttle launch with driving home after winning two matches in Orlando. Also, there was "bonding experience" as team members completed a scavenger hunt throughout campus while being tied together with random partners.
Basma was featured in the Boca Magazine. Read the feature story here.
Far from satisfied, FAU now sets its sights on winning the conference championship.
"I look forward to the fall season," said Hora-Cava. "We are going to have several new players on the team. I look forward to getting to know these new players and seeing how they can contribute to the team's future success."
