LAFAYETTE, LA - The Florida Atlantic softball team became the first no. 2 seed in five years to win a game at the Sun Belt Conference tournament, with a 4-3 win over Western Kentucky on Wednesday.
Carly Speerin had an RBI single in the third inning. A WKU fielding error and a wild pitch allowed the Owls (32-24) to score two more runs and take a 3-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Kerri Croney scored what proved to be the winning run when she scored on an RBI single by Heather Barnes to give FAU a 4-0 advantage.
Western Kentucky loaded the bases in the fifth and scored three runs on the strength of two base hits and a FAU defensive error. The Lady Toppers had an opportunity to tie the game, but a great throw by Brittany Walker led to the potential tying run getting thrown out. The Lady Toppers had runners on first and second with just one out in the seventh, but Rose Gressley struck out a batter and Kerri Croney made a diving catch in right field for the game's final out.
The Owls are the first no. 2 seed to win a game at the Sun Belt tournament since 2006. They will advance to play South Alabama in a winners' bracket game at 4:00 eastern on Thursday. Live stats of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
