BOCA RATON, FL - Carly Speerin extended her hitting streak to 11 games on Saturday as the Florida Atlantic softball team swept a doubleheader from North Texas.
The Owls (24-18, 8-3) won game one 3-0. All three FAU runs came in the second inning, as Ashlyn Parmerter, Hailey Broyles and Brittany Walker all had RBI in the inning. That would be more than enough support for Rose Gressley as the senior threw a complete game two-hitter for her 12th win of the year.
In Saturday's second game, FAU had to stave off a late Mean Green rally for a 7-6 victory. Three North Texas wild pitches, a fielding error and base hits by Speerin and Taylor Fawbush helped the Owls to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Owls struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead, with Speerin, Fawbush and Parmerter all having RBI singles in the inning. The Mean Green made a dent in the lead in the sixth, scoring three runs, two coming on a homerun by Maritza Martinez.
Heather Barnes laced a two run single in the bottom of the sixth, reestablishing a 7-3 lead for the Owls. North Texas had a base hit and a walk sandwich around a strikeout to chase Taylor Fawbush from the game. Gressley entered and gave up a homerun to Martinez to cut the lead to 7-6. The tying run eventually reached third base before Gressley struck out the last batter to win the game for the Owls.
The save was the first of the season for Gressley. Speerin's 11 game hitting streak is the longest by an FAU player this season. The win clinched the series for the Owls, who have yet to lose a conference series yet this season.
The Owls return to the diamond on Sunday seeking the series sweep. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. and live stats will be available via GameTracker at www.fausports.com.
