BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team held off a pesky ULM team 6-4 on Sunday to win its third straight conference series.
Rose Gressley put the Owls (22-18, 6-3 Sun Belt) in front with a single that scored Kerri Croney and Brittany Walker to give FAU a 2-0 lead. Brianna Love tied the score in the top of the third with a homerun to left field. The Warhawks (20-16, 7-5) had the first three batters of the fourth inning reach safely and eventually scored twice to take a 4-2 lead.
Walker singled and Heather Barnes doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, then after a Gressley lineout, Carly Speerin's bunt single drove in Walker and Taylor Fawbush grounded out to score Barnes and tie the game at 4. The bottom of the sixth began with a base hit by Hailey Broyles and a Croney walk. Walker sacrificed both runners over, and ULM wild pitch scored Broyles and put Croney at third. The Owls then successfully executed a squeeze play, scoring Croney and giving them a 6-4 lead.
Gressley retired the Warhawks in the seventh to win the game and the series for FAU. The Owls continue their homestand on Saturday when they face North Texas in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. Live stats of both games will be available via GameTracker at www.fausports.com.
