TROY, AL - Taylor Fawbush went 3-for-3 at the plate and threw an inning in relief, but the Florida Atlantic softball team lost the rubber game of its three game series to Troy 4-3 on Sunday.
The Owls (27-22, 11-7 Sun Belt) drew first blood when Fawbush singled in Brittany Walker to take a 1-0 lead in the first. FAU had several chances to add to their lead, but could not break through. The Owls left two runners on base in the first, second and third innings.
Fawbush drove in Heather Barnes and Rose Gressley with a double to right center in the fifth inning that gave FAU a 3-0 lead. The pivotal play of the game came in the bottom of the fifth. After a Troy one-out single, Sarah Shields hit a bouncer to Carly Speerin at short that she bobbled, but appeared to flip to Barnes at second in time to get the lead runner. The umpire ruled the runner safe and the Trojans had runners at first and second with one out.
Troy tied the game at 3 in that inning, and took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on a single. FAU had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, but a strikeout ended the game.
FAU lost its second conference series in a row and went just 2-4 in its trip through Alabama. The Owls return home to Boca Raton on Wednesday when they host rival FIU in the first of a three-game roundabout series. The game begins at 6 p.m. and live stats will be available at www.fausports.com.
