BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team swept a doubleheader from Michigan State on Tuesday night.
The Owls (10-10) won the first 5-1. The two teams had combined for just three hits through the first five innings when FAU broke loose for five runs in the sixth inning. Jordan Stovall provided the biggest hit of the inning, a two-run single that drove in Brittany Walker and Heather Barnes. Later in the inning, a Hailey Broyles sacrifice fly and two Spartan throwing errors allowed three more runs to score.
MSU led off the seventh with a solo homerun. Rose Gressley retired the next two batters, but then gave up back to back base hits, before a grounder ended the game. In the nightcap, the Spartans struck first, scoring on a single to left to take a 1-0 lead in the first. Broyles tied the game with an RBI single to center, followed by a Taylor Fawbush double to put FAU ahead. The game broke open in the 4th, with the Owls scoring five runs in the frame, two coming on a double by Walker.
The Spartans scored three runs of their own in the sixth to make the score 7-4. FAU added a run in the bottom of the inning and Fawbush retired the side in order in the seventh to end the game. Stovall went 4-for-7 with three RBI on the night, and Ashlyn Parmerter scored two runs and made several stellar defensive plays.
The Owls return to action on Saturday when they face Hofstra and Rutgers as part of the Parents' Weekend Tournament. The games are at 6 and 8 p.m. respectively and live stats for all the tournament games will be available at www.fausports.com.
