BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball experienced the highs and lows of tournament play, splitting their two games on Saturday at the Parents' Weekend tournament.
The Owls used two big innings to defeat Hofstra 7-0 in their first game of the night. Kerry Croney had a two-run triple in the second to put FAU ahead. She later scored on a Pride fielding error to make the score 3-0. Ashlyn Parmerter began a two-out rally in the third inning with a single to left field. After a Hailey Broyles single and a Quincy Wilson walk, Kimberly Diaz slapped a pinch-hit double down the left field line to push the lead to 5-0. Croney followed with another extra base hit, this one gave the Owls a 7-0 lead.
Rose Gressley struck out six and threw a complete game two-hitter in the win. FAU lost a pitchers' duel in the nightcap to Rutgers 1-0. The two teams combined for just six hits in the game. The only run came in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Mikelyn Messina, after Brittney Lindley was awarded first base on a disputed hit by pitch ruling. The Owls were retired in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
FAU wraps up action in the Parents' Weekend tournament on Sunday when they face Michigan State and Rutgers at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively. Live stats for all the games will be available at www.fausports.com.
