BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team (8-9) concluded the 2011 Miken Classic with an 11-3 victory over Seton Hall University, Sunday night.
The day proved longer than the Owls would have liked with several rain delays and preceding long games that pushed the start of the Owls game versus Seton Hall back more than two hours. The time delay seemed to ignite FAU who went to work and finished the game in five innings.
Kerri Croney led-off the bottom of the first with a walk. Croney stole second, with one out, and didn't move to third until two teammates loaded the bases via walks. The trio would move up on a wild pitch to score the first run of the game. Jordan Stovall would draw a walk to load the bases once again. Carly Speerin tagged the first hit of the game to move everyone up one. Pitcher Taylor Fawbush followed with a single to score one. Ashlyn Parmerter then hit a two-RBI single. With two out the lead-off hitter Croney returned to the plate to send the pitch off the left field fence to score two and earn her second double of the season.
Seton Hall would load the bases in the top of the second but would fail to score. The Pirates would string together three hits in the top of the third to score three but the Owls got one back in the bottom half of the inning on a Hailey Broyles single to left. FAU's Cari Curfman led off the third inning with a double and scored on a one-out Fawbush triple. Fawbush later scored on a Whitley Herb single to the pitcher to give the Owls a 10-3 advantage.
The Pirates threatened again in the top of the fifth with runners on second and third but Fawbush, who moved to 4-4, was thankful for a ground out and a fly to right.
Flirting with the mercy rule FAU's Curfman sent a run scoring triple to right field to give the Owls an 11-3 victory and end the game in the bottom half of the fifth. FAU will next play host to Michigan State University, in a double-header, beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 8.
