BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team (7-9) broke open a 0-0 game in the bottom of the fifth with a first and third double steal to take the game from Stony Brook, 1-0.
The two teams had opportunities in every inning. But it was the Owls who used small ball to grab the first run of the game. Brittany Walker led off the inning with a walk. She moved to second on a wild pitch and made it to third on what was designed as a sacrifice bunt, but thankfully for the Owls Heather Barnes beat out the bunt setting up a first and third situation.
Barnes executed the steal, drawing the throw from the catcher and then taunted the second baseman who made the cut allowing Walker to slide head first into home, around the catcher's attempt at a tag.
Senior pitcher Rose Gressley (4-6) used the lead to retire the Sea Wolves in order in the top half of the sixth, her first inning without a runner aboard. FAU will return to the field Sunday, playing at 5 p.m., the fifth game of the day and the final day of the 2011 Miken Classic. Games at the FAU Stadium begin at 9 a.m.
