BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Florida Atlantic softball team won their opening Sun Belt series against Western Kentucky by winning the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.
The Owls (18-16, 2-1 Sun Belt) had the bases loaded in the second inning of game one, when Kerri Croney sent the payoff pitch over the fence in left field to put FAU up 4-0. WKU scored a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 4-1. FAU loaded the bases again in the third and Ashlyn Parmerter drew a walk to score Rose Gressley. Cari Curfman followed with a double down the right field line that drove in Carly Speerin and Jordan Stovall.
Amanda Thomas hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning, then led off the bottom of the sixth inning with her second solo homerun of the game to pull with 7-3. WKU's best chance to make thing interesting came that same inning, but Gressley struck out Laura Smith to end the threat. Gressley retired the side in order in the seventh to seal the win.
In the second game, WKU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Three Owl hits and two Hilltoppers errors put FAU ahead 2-1 in the top of the second. The two teams battled for control of the game, with WKU ultimately gaining the upper hand, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 lead. They added another in the sixth to provide the final margin of victory.
The Owls continue their road trip on Tuesday, when they play a doubleheader at Middle Tennessee. The first game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. eastern. Live stats of both games will be available via GameTracker at www.fausports.com.
