BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team powered its way to a 3-1 victory over the University of Tennessee Chattanooga Saturday afternoon at the USA National Training facility tournament in Clermont, FL
UTC, the home team, scored the first run taking advantage of FAU mistakes. The Mocs led off the bottom of the second with a single to right. The following hitter put down a bunt that was fielded cleanly and thrown to second to get the lead runner, but was misplayed at the base allowing the runners to move to second and third. One play later, another bunt was fielded and thrown home, but not in time giving the Mocs their lone run. UTC would load the bases on FAU sophomore starting pitcher Taylor Fawbush, who picked up her first win of the season, but Fawbush would be the defensive player to end the inning catching a line drive and doubling up the runner on third.
FAU threatened in the top of the third. Senior left fielder Haily Broyles beat out a one-out single to short and moved to second on a wild pitch. She later advanced to third on a ground out, but it was as far as she would go. The Owls would go down in order the next two innings.
FAU would take the lead in the top of the sixth when Brittany Walker drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a single to left by Kerri Croney, who was 5-for-14 in the tournament and 2-for-3 in the game. The duo was driven in by a three-run blast to the deepest part of the field by senior Rose Gressley, who played first. FAU was held scoreless in the seventh and held on to the 3-1 victory.
FAU will next play host to a six team tournament with games starting at 9 a.m., Friday, February 18 at the FAU softball stadium.
