Lafayette, LA - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team saw its hopes of a Sun Belt Conference tournament berth slip away with Thursday night's 4-2 loss at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
With a 1-7-1 league record, the Owls have been eliminated from postseason play. The team has a 5-10-1 mark for the season. ULL picked up its first conference triumph and improved to 5-12-1 overall.
The host Ragin' Cajuns built a 3-0 advantage in the first half on goals by Kayla Henrie, Hayden Gibson and Shelby Isley. FAU cut the deficit with two minutes before halftime on freshman defender Meagan Borger's first career goal. Fellow freshman Mariah Bessette set up the score.
The Owls trimmed the lead to 3-2 as sophomore forward Jesse Shugg found the back of the net in the 54th minute. The goal was her seventh of the season and redshirt junior midfielder Meghan Brown helped set up the break-away opportunity. The team followed with several scoring opportunities, but couldn't get the tying goal.
Then, ULL put the match away on a penalty kick goal by Megan Riley with just under seven minutes remaining in the match.
The Ragin' Cajuns held a 14-12 shot advantage, including a 12-6 margin in the first half.
Shugg led FAU with five shots, while sophomore forward Brittney Nash added three shots. Freshman midfielder Nina Mas, senior defender Gabriela DeVries, Brown and Borger each had one shot a piece.
The Owls return home for a Senior Day match against the University of Louisians-Monroe on Sunday, October 23, beginning at noon. The program will honor DeVries and Brown before their final home match.
