Boca Raton, FL - With a national ranking and coming off a Sun Belt Conference championship and NCAA regional appearance, it was easy to see why the Florida Atlantic University baseball team had a spirited practice on Friday in its first time on the field for the spring season.
The Owls' practice featured team defensive drills and batting practice before concluding with a three-inning intra squad scrimmage at the FAU Baseball Stadium, 777 Glades Road in Boca Raton. The team is preparing for the season opener in three weeks - February 18th against Hofstra University.
"Today's practice was spirited and energetic," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "The guys were excited to be back on the field as a team."
The scrimmage was highlighted by senior Colby Gratton's game-winning hit with two outs in the third inning. Meanwhile, there were strong performances by starting pitchers Paul Davis, a junior college transfer from Pensacola Junior College, and Jake Meiers, a sophomore right-hander from Lake Worth, Fla., while junior Ahmed Garcia tossed an inning in relief for both teams. Garcia has returned to the mound after missing the 2010 season with an arm injury.
"I thought it was a well played and crisp game," said McCormack. FAU will return to the field on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
