Boca Raton, FL - An early-season matchup between Florida Atlantic University and the University of Florida will take place on February 22, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. Both nationally ranked college baseball teams are coming off league championship and postseason appearances from last season.
Tickets for this special FAU-Florida game will range from $5 for grass area seating to $17 for field box seats behind home plate. Fans also can purchase $20 all-you-can-eat buffet dinner at the stadium's party deck.
"We are excited about playing in such a beautiful venue against such a quality opponent," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "It will give Owl fans that live in the north part of Palm Beach County an opportunity to come and see us play."
The Owls earned their first Sun Belt Conference championship and advanced to the championship game of last year's NCAA Division I regional tournament. McCormack's team, with a 37-24 record a year ago, is ranked No. 36 in Collegiate Baseball's preseason poll. The team returns eight position players and two members of the starting rotation, including preseason All-American outfield/relief pitcher Andy Mee.
Meanwhile, Florida is ranked second in the preseason after winning its first Southeastern Conference title since 2005 last spring, advancing to the 2010 NCAA College World Series and posted a 47-17 record. The Gators, which eliminated FAU from last year's Gainesville regional, return eight position players and 11 pitchers for this season.
Roger Dean Stadium is a $28-million spring training complex for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Florida Marlins, and is the home field during the summer for the Palm Beach Cardinals and Jupiter Hammerheads minor league teams in the Class A-Advanced Florida State League. The stadium seats 6,600 and features field box, loge box, bleacher, party deck, grass berm and luxury skybox seating.
FAU begins the 2011 season on Friday, February 18 with a home game against Hofstra University. It starts a three-game opening weekend with the team from the Colonial Athletic Association.
