BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team will open Mid-American Conference play on Friday, October 1 when they take on No. 1 University of Akron at Lee Jackson Field in Akron, Ohio.
"Not everyone has the opportunity to play a No. 1 team," said Kos Donev, FAU's men's soccer head coach. "It's also a conference game which carries a lot of weight."
The game will mark the first time in program history that FAU will take on a conference opponent ranked No. 1 in the country on the road.
"We are excited to go up there," Donev said. "The team is looking forward to the opportunity and the coaching staff is looking for a positive result."
The Owls (2-3-1, 0-0-0) fell to top-ranked Akron last season with a score of 3-0 in front of a home crowd in Boca Raton. FAU split a pair of games this past week to in-state opponents defeating the University of North Florida at home and falling to Stetson University on the road.
The Zips (6-0-0, 0-0-0) average 2.5 goals per game and have yet to concede a goal through six games. Lee Jackson Field also boats a 3,800 attendance average through three home games this season.
Following the tilt against Akron, FAU will travel west to Kalamazoo, Michigan and take on another conference foe, Western Michigan University on Sunday, October 3. The Broncos won a tightly contested 2-1 decision last season in Boca Raton.
"The conference games are the bread and butter of any season," Donev said. "If you want to go to the NCAA playoffs, you have to play well during your conference games."
