BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team has named Tom Newell as the assistant coach for the upcoming 2010 season.
Newell re-joins the FAU staff after serving as an assistant under head coach Kos Donev for four seasons from 2000-03.
"We're very excited to have Tom back on staff," said Donev. "He brings a lot of experience to the program and we look forward to having him on board."
Most recently, Newell served for six seasons as the sports information director and head men's soccer coach at Eastern Nazarene College (2004-09), and was a part of the Massachusetts ODP coaching staff from 2003-05.
"I'm very excited to return to FAU," said Newell. "I know that my experiences and continued development as a coach will give Coach Donev a rich resource to draw from as a first assistant."
Newell's collegiate coaching career began at Marymount University and Eastern University where he served as assistant coach with the men's soccer programs from 1996-99. Newell played his collegiate soccer for Messiah College, where the team tallied 63 wins, 15 losses and three ties in four seasons from 1987-1990. He was honored to captian the team his senior year while scoring 14 goals and seven assists.
During his college summers, Newell was privileged to play for such competitive teams as the semi-professional Maryland Bays feeder team and the Jamaican Nats' Amateur Men's Team.
Following college, he continued playing soccer in the Washington, D.C. area's competitive men's league as his coaching career took shape.
The Silver Spring, Maryland native earned his Bachelor of Arts in health and physical education from Messiah College in 1991, and holds an Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA. He currently resides in West Palm Beach.
