Special to FAU from FAUOWLACCESS.com - When it comes to speed, Florida Atlantic junior catcher Kerri Croney both giveth and taketh away.
Not only is Croney one of the fastest players on the team, but she also is adept at throwing runners out on the basepaths.
"My favorite part of being a catcher is having someone think they can run on me," Croney said. "When you gun them out, it's a great feeling. That's my favorite part of catching - throwing someone out by three feet."
And Croney has done that plenty for the Owls this season. Fourteen, a would-be base stealers have been gunned down by Croney, a Tampa-Plant graduate, this season.
All that despite the fact that her reputation as a catcher, where she has started for three seasons, has kept some teams from testing her arm.
"It's funny that since my freshman season I've seen fewer and fewer runners run on me, but when we play a team we don't play a lot, I'll see runners trying to steal," Croney said.
But when it's Croney's time to run, she isn't scared of anyone. Her aggressive baserunning has enabled her to leg out a team-high four triples and five doubles this season.
Croney is batting .250 and has scored 15 runs, second on the team to Blair Bodenmiller's 18.
Croney's quickness is mostly due to a grueling off-season training regimen that allowed her to lose 15 pounds. She went from 160 pounds to her current weight of 145 pounds by training harder and eating the right things over the summer and into the fall.
"It was normal workout routine about five or six days a week and I just tried to eat better ," Croney said. "It was hard, but overall it was a good experience."
The slimmer Croney has never felt better, saying she has noticed her stamina has increases as the season heads into the stretch run.
"I have a lot more energy and I think the change in diet has a lot to do with that," Croney said. "I rely on speed and can leg out those long hits now. I can really feel the difference."
