BOWLING GREEN, KY (AP) - Ross Gornall kicked a 26-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter and Florida Atlantic held on for a 17-16 victory over Western Kentucky on Saturday.
Bobby Rainey scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to put the Hilltoppers ahead 16-14 in the third quarter. But Gornall's 26-yarder with 14:30 left in the fourth put the Owls (3-5, 2-4 Sun Belt Conference) ahead for good.
Alfred Morris led FAU with 84 yards rushing and a touchdown. Jeff Van Camp passed for 140 yards and a 62-yard touchdown pass to Lester Jean to give the Owls a 14-9 lead in the second quarter.
Rainey finished with 163 yards rushing on 33 carries, including an 11-yard rushing score in the opening quarter for the Hilltoppers (1-8, 1-4). Kawaun Jakes threw for only 70 yards as he completed just 8 of his 24 passes, also throwing an interception.
Notes FAU fumbled six times but lost one.
Alfred Morris surpassed Doug Parker (2001-2004), who tallied 1,981 career yards, in the first quarter. Morris needed just 16 yards entering the game to take over sole possion of second place on the list. Charles Pierre (2004-2008) holds the all-time rushing yards mark at 3,069.
With 6:53 remaining in the 2nd quarter, WKU recorded a safety on a snap over the punter's head and out of the endzone. The last time opponents had recorded a safety versus the Owls was 9/26/09 versus ULM.
FAU moved to 26-15 record which sits them atop the nation in games decided by 7 points or less.
