Florida Atlantic University women's tennis players enjoyed the opportunity to play against and be introduced to members of the Boca Raton Resort & Club recently. This special event was organized by club members Howard Guggenheim, Bernice Kaminski and Jackson Smart.
"This was a great opportunity for our players to get court time at such a beautiful resort and mingle with its club members," said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU's head women's tennis coach.
Several FAU team members showcased their playing skills by helping resort members during a warm-up period and doubles practice matches.
Freshman Marlene Ryan, a native of Delray Beach, exhibited the team's pre-match stretching exercises. Doubles matches were spread throughout the complex with FAU players helping out on each court. The groups would change courts nearly every 30 minutes.
Even though it was all in fun, the action got competitive at times between the Owls' players and Boca Raton resort members.
"This is the first time my team had a chance to mingle and play doubles at such an exotic resort," said Hora-Cava. "As a coach, it was gratifying to see the ladies having fun playing with different people at all skill levels."
FAU players also learned valuable lessons about how to be successful in their post-collegiate careers.
"The team had a great opportunity to speak to resort members and get some pointers on how to be successful in the business world," said Hora-Cava. "The players got to trade secrets while also having fun on the court."
Kaminski, a local real estate agent, joins her husband in being loyal FAU athletic department boosters.
"At the end I had several players ask me when we could do something like this again," said Hora-Cava. "It was an enjoyable experience for our players and the resort members. We would look forward to coming back to the resort during the spring season."
FAU will begin the 2011 dual match schedule on Friday, January 21, 2011 when it battles nationally ranked University of Miami. The home opener will be against in-state rival Florida Gulf Coast University on Monday, February 21.
