The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team will seek its first Sun Belt Conference (SBC) victory when the Owls host the University of North Texas on Friday, October 2 at 7 p.m. and the University of Denver on Sunday, October 4 at noon at the FAU Soccer Stadium. The action kicks off a four-match home stand for Coach Brian Dooley and his squad.
FAU, with a 2-7-2 record, has enjoyed success on its home pitch this fall, recording a 1-1-2 mark in its last four matches at FAU Soccer Stadium, including a 1-1 tie against the University of Arkansas of the Southeastern Conference.
Senior forward Ashley Mannarino continues to pace the Owls' offensive attack by scoring a team-high four goals. The Boca Raton native also has recorded nine points on the season. Sophomore defender Gabriela DeVries scored her first goal of the season in the second half of the 4-2 loss at Western Kentucky University on September 25.
Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Lantes leads the SBC with 73 saves and has made eight or more saves in five matches this season.
The Owls have faced a challenging schedule early in the season, with the team playing the top four teams in the SBC's preseason poll. North Texas is coming off a weekend sweep and stands 6-4 on the season. The Mean Green were picked to finish in second place in the league's preseason poll after placing second last season with an 8-2-1 league record. Leading the way is "Preseason Player of the Year" Kendall Juett, who ranks in the top 10 in four major offensive categories and was named the SBC's player of the week earlier this fall.
Denver is the SBC's defending regular season and tournament champions, and has been ranked as high as 21st in the nation this season. The Pioneers enter this weekend's slate of games with a 2-0 league mark and have recorded a victory over nationally-ranked University of Kansas - one of four matches against ranked opponents during the nonconference portion of the season schedule. Kaitlin Bast recorded a hat trick in Denver's victory on September 27 against University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
