BOCA RATON, FL - When head football coach Howard Schnellenberger talks about teamwork, the wide receiving corps is near the top of the list of things he thinks about.
With a strong group of returning skill players, Schnellenberger emphasizes the main objective when playing a football game, winning.
"It's got to be a team game and players have to be unselfish," he said. "When one makes a super catch it's everybody's catch, and when one drops one it's everybody's drop."
One player that will be counted on is redshirt senior and weak side receiver Cortez Gent. His big play potential will be counted on to ignite the rest of the receivers.
"A guy like Gent on the back side, they are flirting with disaster if they leave him there with one guy," Schnellenberger said. "We always put our fastest, best receiver on the weak side."
Last year, Gent piled up 935 receiving yards on 60 catches, nine of which were for touchdowns. Junior Lester Jean was the second most productive receiver, catching 25 balls for 257 yards and two touchdowns.
Other receivers that will see time are redshirt seniors Chris Bonner and Conshario Johnson and redshirt juniors Avery Holley, and Grant Glover.
Last year, they compiled 15 catches for 148 yards. With many of the receptions coming from the tight ends, sometimes the skill players are overlooked.
After a spectacular year last season, Schnellenberger expects his receivers to provide good targets for redshirt senior quarterback Rusty Smith. If they can free themselves from the defenders, teams will struggle to keep up with the Owls.
