BOCA RATON, FL - The University of New Orleans overcame a seven-run deficit by scoring nine times in the fourth inning and then plated eight more in the seventh en route to beating Florida Atlantic University 19-12.
Nick DelGuidice had three extra-base hits for a Florida Atlantic (24-19; 7-14 Sun Belt) team that raced out to a 7-0 lead on its home field.
New Orleans (18-27; 9-13 Sun Belt) batted-around twice, scoring 17 of its season-high 19 runs in two big innings. The first of Nick Mitchell's two homers put UNO up in the fourth and Nick Schwaner's second two-run double came in the seventh, after FAU had tied it 9-9.
Mitchell finished the day 4-for-6, Schwaner was 3-for-4, and both had four RBI and scored four runs. UNO had 20 hits and FAU pitchers issued 10 walks. The top five batters in UNO's lineup combined to go 13-for-21.
UNO's nine-run fourth inning quickly changed the mood at FAU Stadium after three RBI's by Nick Criaris helped the Owls jump out in front Adam Morrison, who had cruised through the first three innings - facing just one over the minimum - began the fourth by walking two of the inning's first three batters.
Schwaner and Rodarrick Jones each hit a two-run doubles in the fourth. Schwaner's came off Morrison to make it 7-3 and Jones' double off Hugh Adams pulled UNO to within one, 7-6. The onslaught continued, culminated by Mitchell's two-run homer off Adams which made it 9-7.
In the sixth, DelGuidice drove a 2-2 pitch from UNO reliever Mats Mattson into the FAU bullpen beyond the fence in right field. The solo shot, DelGuidice's fourth, tied the game at nine apiece.
Eight singles in the UNO seventh, including a tie-braking pinch-hit knock by Tyrone Weathers, was part of an eight-run frame that turned the tie game into a 17-9 UNO lead heading into the late innings.
Mitchell added a solo shot in the UNO ninth. The game took 3 hours and 51 minutes to complete.
Game Two of the weekend series set for Saturday at 4 p.m. ET
